Why You Need to Protect Your Tattoo from the Sun During Removal

So, you’ve started laser tattoo removal — or maybe you're just thinking about it. Either way, there’s one thing we need to talk about before your next session: sun exposure.

We get it — Nova Scotia summers are short, and when the sun's out, you want your skin out too. But when it comes to laser removal, sun and ink do not mix.

Here’s why protecting your tattoo from the sun is non-negotiable if you want safe, effective results.

1. Sun Exposure Increases the Risk of Damage

When your tattooed skin gets sun — especially UV rays — it can:

  • Darken the pigment, making removal harder

  • Inflame the skin, increasing your risk of burns during treatment

  • Delay healing between sessions

Laser removal already puts controlled stress on the skin. If your skin is already sunburned or tanned, it’s more reactive and more vulnerable to side effects like blistering, scarring, or hyperpigmentation.

2. We Can’t Treat Tanned or Burned Skin

If the area has any sunburn, new tan, or visible color change, we often have to reschedule your appointment. That’s not us being overly cautious — it’s about safety.

Lasers target pigment. When your natural skin tone is darker (from a tan), the laser can’t always tell the difference between ink and melanin. That means:

  • Higher risk of burns

  • Possible skin lightening (hypopigmentation)

3. How to Protect Your Tattoo Between Sessions

Here’s what we recommend — especially in spring, summer, and fall:

- Daily SPF 30 or higher

Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen. Apply it even if it’s cloudy.

- Physical cover-up

If the tattoo is on your arm, leg, neck, or hand — cover it with clothing when outdoors.

UV rays still get through car windows too.

-Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours if outdoors

Especially if you're sweating, swimming, or spending more than 20 minutes outside.

4. A Little Protection = Faster Results

Consistent sun protection keeps your skin healthy and calm — which means:

  • More consistent fading

  • Shorter treatment timelines

  • Lower chance of complications

It’s one of the few things you can do that directly affects how well your removal goes.

Quick Recap

Before and after laser sessions:

  • Keep the area out of the sun

  • Wear SPF daily

  • Let us know about any tanning or sunburns

Your skin will thank you — and your ink will fade better, faster, and safer.
