IPL vs. Laser: Which One Do You Actually Need?

If you’ve been researching skin treatments, you’ve probably seen the terms IPL and laser thrown around. They both use light to treat the skin, but they’re not the same—
and knowing the difference helps you choose what’s right for you. At Revive, we use the Hollywood Spectra laser, not IPL. If IPL is the right fit, we’ll let you know so you can find a clinic that offers it.
What is IPL?
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Instead of one focused beam, it delivers a broad spectrum of light, like a camera flash. Different filters target issues in the upper layers
of the skin.
Typically used for:
Redness and broken capillaries
Sun damage and freckles
General brightening and evening of skin tone
Think of IPL as a “surface-level tune-up” for the skin. If your main goal is to polish the surface of your skin and deal with mild discoloration, IPL can be a good choice.
What is Laser?
Lasers use a single, focused wavelength. That makes them precise and powerful, able to reach deeper layers of the skin. Different lasers are built for different jobs—tattoo removal, pigment correction, collagen stimulation, and more. Our Hollywood Spectra laser is one of the most advanced options available.
At Revive, we use it for:
Tattoo removal
Pigmentation (including melasma)
Collagen rejuvenation and fine lines
Acne scars and texture
Carbon peels for overall skin refresh
Lasers are like a scalpel compared to IPL’s paintbrush—focused, deeper, and designed for specific results. Because it’s more targeted, laser can reach issues IPL can’t, and it does so with less risk of damaging surrounding skin.
When to Choose IPL vs. Laser
If you want an overall glow-up: IPL is often the go-to for redness, sun spots, and tone.
If you want to target something specific or deeper: Laser is the better choice for tattoo ink, melasma, and collagen building.
If you’re not sure: Many people benefit from a combination. IPL can polish the surface while laser handles the heavy lifting underneath.
The Bottom Line
Both IPL and laser have their place. It’s not about which is “better”—it’s about which is right for your skin goals. At Revive, we’ll look at your concerns, your skin type, and your long-term goals to recommend the right tool for the job.
